Project
SafeWAVE (Streamlining the Assessment of environmental effects of WAVE energy)
Duration
2020-2023. Extended until June 2024
Financed by
CINEA (Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency)
Funds
€ 1.5 million
Description of the project
The objective of the SafeWAVE project is to overcome the non-technological barriers that may hinder the future development of marine energy. Indeed, this marine energy is one of the pillars of the European Union’s blue growth strategy, namely wave energy. The knowledge generated with the project will allow managers to improve information on the environmental risks of wave energy. Uncertainty about environmental impacts will be reduced through campaigns and environmental models, maritime spatial planning instruments will be created for decision-making and public information and participation will be the central axis of social recognition.
In particular, at BiMEP, the SafeWAVE project has facilitated the collection of underwater noise data during the installation and operation phases of a wave energy device, as well as the analysis of its effects on the whole seabed and fish by new techniques. In addition, public surveys were conducted at the Mutriku and Armintza swell facilities. On 23 September 2023, an information day was held at the latter installation.
The results of the SafeWAVE can be consulted and downloaded on the project website.
